5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum | Fifth Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Getting the 5th-grade homeschool curriculum correct is essential, as this is a pivotal point in your child’s education. The fifth-grade homeschool curriculum must be designed to suit the child’s educational needs.

It is important to have some guidelines available for the various subject so that you will be able to evaluate your child’s progress.  After all, you want to make sure that your child is excelling before moving ahead.

At the same time, if you find that your child is having difficulty in an area, you will want to spend more time concentrating on it.  For this reason, here is a list of what your child should know in each subject before moving out of fifth grade.

5th Grade Homeschool Math Curriculum

  • Recognizing patterns and being able to solve problems with them
  • The ability to collect data, create a chart with the data and analyze the data
  • The ability to answer word problems with probability in them
  • The ability to come to a conclusion for problems that have multiple steps
  • The ability to use a calculator to check your work
  • The ability to estimate
  • The ability to measure liquids and surfaces

Language Arts 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Whenever it comes to Language Arts, your fifth grade homeschool curriculum  needs to know the following:

  • The ability to read books, form an opinion about them, then write up a summary about what was read
  • The ability to discuss books with other people who are the same age
  • The ability to relate stories to your own life
  • The ability to read fifth grade readers fluently
  • The ability to read with emphasis
  • Understanding referencing
  • The ability to write your own story with a setting, plot and a conclusion
  • The ability to write a rough draft, edit the rough draft and produce a final paper
  • The ability to research facts and include them in the papers that you write

  • Understanding how to review and remove information that doesn’t need to be included within a paper
  • The ability to take a topic and prepare an oral report on it

  • Learning 20 new spelling and vocabulary words per week

Fifth Grade Homeschool Science Curriculum

In science your 5th grade homeschool curriculum needs to have:

  • The ability to conduct a scientific experiment
  • The ability to conduct an observation
  • The ability to record all 5 senses in order to aid in an experiment or observation
  • The ability to use a classification system or make one of your own
  • The ability to come to a conclusion and give a report citing the facts
  • Mastering matter and what causes it to change
  • Understanding both mass and volume
  • Understanding physical and chemical properties
  • The ability to conduct an investigation so that you can compare properties
  • Understanding energy and how it is used
  • Understanding sound waves and how they travel
  • Understanding cells in both plants and animals
  • Beginning to understand how the bones and muscles in your body work
  • Understanding how plants and animals reproduce
  • Understanding how an ecosystem works than creating your own
  • Understanding how fault lines affect earthquakes and volcanoes
  • Discussing and labeling the various layers of the earth
  • Understanding fossils and researching how they are dated and what they tell scientists
  • Understanding the 2 types of eclipses
  • Reviewing the solar system
  • Telling why Earth is the only planet that is able to sustain life

Social Studies 5th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

For social studies, your fifth grader for their homeschool curriculum needs to:

  • Reviewing a citizen’s role
  • Discussing ways in which you can participate in your community
  • Describing the government and its rights and responsibilities
  • Describing your rights and responsibilities within your family
  • Becoming involved in a community service project
  • Understanding immigration and why individuals choose to leave their country
  • Comparing the cultures of some countries that immigrated to the United States

  • Understanding taxation: how it came out, its purpose and how it is regulated
  • Defining the bartering system
  • Discussing the national debt
  • Defining credit and talk about both its good and bad points
  • Understanding the law of supply and demand
  • Discussing laws that are made by the government and why some of them change
  • Discussing the 3 branches of government and the details or each
  • Knowing the difference between a privilege and a right
  • Discussing other cultures and the effects that they have on America’s culture
  • Reviewing art and music from other cultures then comparing them to your own culture
